West Iredell Wrestling.... A Big Night!

West Iredell Wrestling.... A Big Night!

The High School Wrestling Season is well underway!  West Iredell has increased its numbers, changed coaches and has a New Exciting Climate that is changing things for the better.

On November 30th, 2010 the West Iredell Wrestling Team traveled to face South Iredell coached by Legendary Coach Bill Mayhew.

Coach Mayhew is currently the 3rd Winningest Coach in the U.S. with over 700 victories in over 40 years of coaching.  He is the #1 Winningest Coach in North Carolina.  "Coach Mayhew is not only a remarkable Coach but a wonderful man as well," said Coach Pavia Head Wrestling Coach of West Iredell.

What happened that night was also.... Remarkable!

The West Iredell Wrestling Team fought a hard battle and half-way through was losing 31-12, something that has been very familiar to it's' program.

But this night would prove different!  West was tired of losing and ready to make a change!  So they did!  With the match starting at the 160lb. weight class things would change as South would fight to keep the swell of momentum not only in the match but for well over 5 years against their cross-town rivals West Iredell.

Coach Pavia knew a change was needed so he had made a shift in his line-up and sent Clarke Dotson at 215lbs. out to wrestle Heavy Weight.  Clarke would battle first period in what seemed to be an all-of-a-sudden turn around by pinning his opponent.  Coach Pavia knew that West needed to see that they not only had a renewed hope but also needed to SEE that they were still in the match and could WIN!  Something they were not use to!

The match would continue and South would battle back winning a hard fought match at 112lbs. in overtime.  Again South won at 119lbs. with a pin and seemed to be back in command.  But all was not finished!

Coach Pavia had the entire team get behind the bench and rallied them to understand that mathematically West was still in it.  They followed his lead and quickly got back to the business of cheering their teammate on with a Roar of "WARRIORS!"

West would then run off five straight pins from 125lbs. (Corey Masquef), 130lbs. (Payton Shuford), 135lbs. (Trey Mills), 140lbs. (Colton Shuford), and 145lbs. (Brock Messick) as South watched their grip slip and lose for the first time in many years against the Warriors of West Iredell Wrestling.

The Small Band of West Iredell Warrior Fans made it known that this was to be a different night!

As one parent turned to the other and said; "Ya know, it's nice to win!"

They realized that things have changed.  "Although there is much work to be done...." said Coach Pavia.  "This is a BIG Night for our Program!"  "This is a BIG Night for our kids!"
