What a Weekend!

 

In so many ways this past weekend (Dec. 10-11) was a landmark weekend for the West Iredell Wrestling Program.

 

First, was leaving the Raider-Viking Duals after Day 1 undefeated at 3-0.  Keep in mind the Raider-Viking Duals is a grueling Event that pits 12 teams against one another to wrestle 8 Duals in Two Days!  Whew!

 

Although Day 2 was not as Successful it did put US against 2 of the Top Ranked Teams in the State in two different divisions.  Lake Norman… currently ranked #2 in the State (4A Division-Large Schools) and Newton Conover…. Currently ranked #2 in the State (2A Division – Small Schools).

 

The result wasn't in our favor but there were a lot of good highlights to consider "Landmarks" for our team and program.  For one, we did NOT get shutout by 4A Power House Lake Norman and managed to win 2 matches.  I know it doesn't sound like a lot but when more than half of the individuals on their team are State Ranked and even one Nationally Ranked (Harrison Honeycutt – 215lbs. #3 in the U.S.) it shows just what kind of "heart" our kids have.  The two wrestlers who won were Senior Trey Mills at 135lbs. – (Wrestling up from 130lbs.) and 125lb. Freshman Payton Shuford – more on Payton below!

 

Freshman Sensation Payton Shuford continued to amaze not just his teammates but other teams watching him go undefeated (8-0) for the weekend with a Highlight Victory over #8 State Ranked Ryan Renfro (Senior) from Lake Norman and solid victories against tough competitors from Newton-Conover, North Iredell and Alexander Central.  Payton is currently 17-0 and is starting to make a name for himself…. Come check him out and the rest of his teammates as WE battle Conference Foe South Rowan on December 21^st in front of a HOME Crowd!  This is our First Conference Match and there's a lot on the line…. Ya gotta be there!

 

All in all, it was a good effort from the entire TEAM and ALL should be congratulated for a Respectable – Hard Fought 4-4 record at the Raider-Viking Duals.
